Z Pack Antibiotics For Sinus Infections

Written By: ibzzA1 - Aug• 27•12

Have you ever laid in bed feeling like someone stuck an ice pick over or under your eye and you just couldn’t get rid of the pain for days?” Or maybe you're "sniffing" every minute? That is sinus. Is there anything much worse than your sinus pain?

Sinus infections affect millions of Americans every year. Stop the pain and suffering from sinusitis with Silver Sinus!

In 1999, The Mayo Clinic released its findings that fungus is likely the cause of nearly all cases of chronic sinusitis or chronic sinus infection. Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses. Most cases of sinusitis are caused by viruses. Other causes include:Allergies, exposure to smoke, dust or other irritants in the home, school or workplace and-bacterial infection

How can you treat sinus?

1) Antibiotics:These only help sinusitis when it is caused by a bacterial infection. Because sinusitis is usually caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t help most cases of sinusitis. Taking antibiotics won’t prevent a stuffy nose from turning into a bacterial sinus infection. In fact, taking unnecessary antibiotics puts your family at risk for developing resistant infections later.

So what can you do?

Cough and runny nose by themselves are unlikely to be caused by a bacterial sinus infection unless those symptoms have been present for more than 10 days. Antibiotics are rarely required unless the following symptoms are present:

1) Pain or pressure on one side of the face
2) Swelling around the eye area
3) Postnasal drip (may cause dry cough)
4) Toothache in the upper jaw in the absence of dental problems

If symptoms are mild or have lasted less than 10 days:

i) Get lots of rest
ii) Avoid cigarette smoke
iii)Help your sinuses drain by:

a) Drinking plenty of fluids (try to avoid caffeine and alcohol)
b) Breathing steam from a shower or bath
c) Using non-medicated saline nose drops or spray several times a day
d) Elevating the head of your bed
e) Using warm facial packs for three to four times a day for 5 -10 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Z-pack( zithromax) antibiotics for sinus infection?
My doctot just called in a RX for me for the z-pack. I'm just wondering how effective it has been for others that have taken it. It's only a 5 day supply so I'm guessing it's pretty strong stuff? I haven't had a sinus infection for years..I'm miserable. Will this stuff make me feel better quickly?

    • ANSWER:
The great thing about the Z-pack is it only needs to be taken for 5 days, but it keeps working for 10 days. It works great. I get a sinus infection every year, and my doctor always prescribes it for me. You'll feel better in a day or less.

  2. QUESTION:
Does Z Pack work well for sinus infections?
I've been on the antibiotic for two days.
I've noticed a little improvement in my throat.
It's not as sore as it was.
Due to the fact it's a five day medicine, I'm
afraid it may not work as well as an amoxicillin.
Have you had positive results when using Z Pack?

    • ANSWER:
For a bacterial sinus infection, it works very well.

Having said that, most sinus infections are VIRAL, not bacterial. So no antibiotic will help if it's viral.

It can be difficult to tell the difference.

  3. QUESTION:
Are antibiotics (Z-pack and Amoxicillin) related to muscle twitches?
Ever since I started taking these antibiotics, I've been having twitches all over my body. Especially above my left eye, and sometimes in my eye. I was diagnosed with cluster headaches, so Im not sure if it has any correlation with the eye twitch. Seeing a neurologist for that soon. I had no infection, because I originally thought I had a sinus infection, and so did my home doctor, but after CT scans, it was clear I had no sinus infection. I'm thinking that it is killing off good bacteria in my body. My stomach growls a lot too.

    • ANSWER:
Probably not. Azithromycin (Z-pack) and Amoxicillin may cause diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain but I haven't heard of it causing any tics or tremors. Eye twitching can be a sign of cluster headaches, so it could be possible that your twitching is due to the headaches and just so happened to start with taking the antibiotics.

However, if you don't have a sinus infection then you should stop taking the antibiotics because it could cause you to have yeast infections, immunosupression, jaundice, fugal/bacterial overgrowth, etc.

  4. QUESTION:
Birth Control & the Z-Pack- Does it cancel out the birth control?
I have been on Birth Control for a while now, never miss a pill and take it at the same time every night. I am on the Z-pack for a sinus infection. Has anyone gotten pregnant while taking antibiotic?
    Thanks!

  5. QUESTION:
So I need advice about taking yaz and taking the antibiotic z pack?
So at the end of july (the 28th to be exact) I started taking a course of z pack for a sinus infection and I'm taking yaz birth control. Well, the 2nd and 3rd day after I started taking the antibiotics I had unprotected sex because my doctor did NOT mention that it would supposedly lower the effectiveness of the pill by 20% but I researched it and almost every site I went to said that it's a myth. And I used an online ovulation calculator predictor and it said I wasn't ovulating but how accurate are those?? And then I called the office and they said that the combination of the two medications can trigger ovulation so its nearly impossible for me to know if I was ovulating... Has anyone had this experience and wound up pregnant or know anyone it has happened to? I know its too early to test but I am stressing about it because I'm only 20 and I'm not planning on a baby anytime soon :( any advice?
I had no idea it had lawsuits out! my mom works at the doctor's office I go to and never mentioned anything! Maybe I should switch I'm sorry to hear about what happened :/

  6. QUESTION:
Are these possible Z-pack side effects?
Taking the Z-pack for a sinus infection that returned after a month (was on Amoxicillan before). I have had a few UTI's in my life, and tend to get at least 1 sinus infection a year, so antibiotics are not new to me, although the z-pack is.

Since taking the Z-pack, I have had loose stools (not full fledged diarrhea, but definitely softer stools). They are normal in color however. Also, some slight stomach cramping, but nothing severe.

Also have had small bouts of dizziness/facial pressure where my sinuses are. They aren't bad, and the spells usually only last a few minutes at a time, maybe 2 or 3 times a day.

Also have had nausea, and last night I did vomit, although it was self inflicted due to an extremely upset stomach. There was even a small - tiny - amount of red blood mixed with the vomit, although I do know that that can happen from time to time.

I did have 2 glasses of wine yesterday but my pharmacist said a couple glasses of wine is ok, just not to overdo it and drink at least 6 hours after taking the med.

Anyway, are these normal side effects from the Z-pack? I know the Z-pack is well tolerated generally. I've taken Amox, bactrim, cipro, before and rarely had side effects. I'm also taking a probiotic to replace the good bacteria. So these side effects are a bit worrisome since I typically respond ok to medications, I rarely experience side effects.

  8. QUESTION:
needing second course of antibiotics for sinus infection-normal?
About three weeks ago, I was dealing with a cold, which then lead to an ear infection, sinus infection, and bronchitis (according to the doc). I was put on zithromax for 5 days. I didn't feel better at all, until about 2 weeks AFTER I finished the medication up. I read that it stays in your system for 10 days after the last dose, so was just waiting it out. I was good for 3 days, and all of a sudden last night, I woke up feeling like crap again. I have had crazy post nasal drip, can't breathe out of my nose and my cough is back and there's some pressure around my nose/lower eye area, but not a ton. Slightly dizzy, like my inner ear infection is back, too.

Does it sound like maybe the meds didn't get the infection entirely the first time around? I mean, it did take a week and a half after I finished the meds to even feel the slightest bit better, so I don't know. I had a refill on the Z pack, so I went ahead and filled it, but I'm not sure if I should go back to the doctor to make sure it's still the sinus infection or what, or just take the refill and THEN go back if I don't feel better after I don't finish these.

Could it just be bad allergies? How could I tell the difference? The weather has been going from 90 to 60 randomly, so maybe it's the change in weather messing with me? I hate taking medications, so it's just got me a bit nervous.
typo in there. I meant go back after I finish the refill

    • ANSWER:
I would call the doc and see if he wants you to take more Z, since it did not work the first time.

  9. QUESTION:
Is this sinus infection going to go away on it's own?
I've had a sinus infection for about 2 weeks now. started a z-pack (antibiotic) on the second day and it didn't do much of anything. i still have a lot of snot, but feel better in general. Is it viral and going to resolve itself or is it bacterial and going to start eating my brain? How will i know if I need more antibiotics?

    • ANSWER:
I had a similar experience earlier this year. The doctor's gave me antibiotic's and it didn't go away. The second time I went they tested me and found out it was a bacterial infection. They gave me some antibiotic that I had to take for 2-3 weeks straight to get rid of it. I would go and get yourself tested to see if its bacterial

  10. QUESTION:
i had a sinus infection, took antibiotics, then as soon as was finished i got sick again...whats it this time?
i had all the symptoms of a sinus infection for almost a week, last wednesday took a z-pack and was feeling better and then the last pill was sunday. on monday i felt really weak, monday night got a fever...still had it yesterday (101). i don't really have other symptoms...slight headache, occasional cough, and in the mornings i have quite a bit of phlegm, that is even green. but during the daytime there is no drainage or phlegm that gets coughed up for the most part, so it doesn't seem like it would still be the sinus infection. is it possible that infection came back or that i have a new infection?

i'm going to a dr this afternoon but dr's don't always have answers...i figured i would ask here and maybe someone has had the same story happen to them before and could offer some helpful opinion. thanks.

Despite its popularity, ENT specialists find azithromycin (Zpak) to be notoriously unreliable as a cure for upper respiratory infections. Perhaps because its activity against major pathogens like hemophilus flu. is inadequate. Over the past decades I've heard countless tales like yours, and I always I love it: I could always be the hero just by prescribing a more suitable antibiotic for 10 days.

Levaquin, Augmentin, or even Septra will clean up after Zpak. Get a replacement Rx from your GP or see an ENT specialist.

Full disclosure: I've been an ENT 30 years.

  11. QUESTION:
On Apri Birth Control... Taking antibiotics.. could I be/get pregnant?
I am on Apri Birth control pills (ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel) and I took 2 antibiotics for a sinus infection. The Z-Pack and Ceftin (Cefuroxime). I take my Apri continuously, meaning that I do not get a period. Well I started to get very light spotting this week (today is day 9/10 of Ceftin) and I had unprotected sex twice. I also have been feeling the twinge in my ovary I used to get before I was on birth control 4 years ago. Along with some bits of blood I had the clear type dischare usually associated with ovulation. What do you think the chances are that I could be pregnant? Is there anyone else out there who is/was pregnant from any of these drugs or the pill and antibiotics? I am 21 and live with my fiance.

    • ANSWER:
most antibiotics will potentially negate the effects of oral contraceptive pills. i'm surprised that your pharmacist didn't give you any patient information on that as that is usually listed on the insert with antibiotics that you might want to persue another birth control option. many antibiotics are metabolized through the same channel as the ocp's and so they lessen the effect of these medications (the bc pills). anyways, what's done is done and at this point i wouldn't trust an online ovulation predictor as its basically an online guess. just continue to use a back up method such as condoms until your period is due, if it arrives late then take a home pregnancy test. and from here on out understand that when you take ANY antibiotic you should use a barrier method such as condoms to further protect yourself. i think most doctors take it for granted that their patients "should" know that, though they don't usually.

      good luck to you.

  13. QUESTION:
    Birth Control & Z-Pack Question.?
I have been on Birth Control for a while now, never miss a pill and take it at the same time every night. I am on the Z-pack for a sinus infection. Has anyone gotten pregnant while taking antibiotic?
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
While on a antibiotic birth control is DEFECTIVE. It stops working when you take the fist pill. Doctors say that you should wait one week after finishing your antibiotics to have sex, and for your birth contol to kick in.

  14. QUESTION:
Are there some antibiotics that are ok to drink alcohol with?
A friend of mine has a sinus infection and they gave her a z-pack (I think that's what it's called). She took it for 5 days but also drank with it. Can this stop the antibiotic from working?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it can reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic. The purpose of taking the antibiotic is to get it into your blood stream so it can be distributed throughout the body to kill bacteria. Drinking alcohol causes you to urinate more, there by causing you to expel the antibiotics you ingested to kill the bacteria and reduce the concentration of the antibiotic in the bloodstream...thereby reducing it's effectiveness.

  15. QUESTION:
Can you mix alcohol with antibiotics?
I am on z-pack for a sinus infection, is it okay to mix it with alcohol?
I only take 5 days of it, but it says it is effective for 10 days, so after the 5 days of taking it, is it okay to drink alcohol?

    • ANSWER:
Drinking Alcohol while on most medications is not recommended. As for antibiotics usually the alcohol will cause it not to work as well. I'd suggest not drinking while on it-- and perhaps next time you're given a prescription ask your doctor if you can drink while on it. Also, a lot of prescriptions will say that alcohol should be avoided while being on the medicine.

I'd personally wait 7-10 days especially if it'll be a large amount of alcohol.

  16. QUESTION:
I took my first dose of Zithromax Z Pack and have questions! bad nausea/pain?
I went to the doctor today for a sinus infection and he prescribed z pack for me. i haven't really been able to eat much as i haven't felt good the past few days. When I got home from picking up my zithromax, I ate a few bites of a gyro sandwich and took the first 2 pills. I felt fine until a few hours later. I am having the worst stomach pain / nausea EVER! I read online that zithromax is a very strong antibiotic and on the first dose it pushes all the bacteria out so you can feel very nauseated?? I don't know how accurate that is.

Has anyone taken zithromax before? I'm allergic to penicillin and I've taken z pack before but its been a few years and I forgot about the horrible stomach pain. how long does the pain last?

I went to make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and just from the smell of the food I had to rush upstairs and lay in front of the fan because I broke out in a hot sweat and got the feeling I had to vomit and diarehia at the same time.

I need to eat but I can't seem to hold anything down. I need to sleep but my stomach is pulsating, aching and throbbing and the pain is keeping me from relaxing off to sleep

please help I am a 22 yr old female

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like you just need to eat more food when you take your next dose. Certain antibiotics have a tendency to make you very nauseated if you don't have enough food in your belly when you take them. An allergic reaction should cause symptoms like a rash, hives, and/or difficulty breathing.

  17. QUESTION:
    sinus infection or bronchitis?

Now, I have developed a productive cough, and I am coughing up yellow & brown phlegm. I do smoke about 1/2 pack a day. My ears feel like there is alot of pressure in them, and I have alot of nasal drip in my throat. Could this be another sinus infection, or does this sound like bronchitis???

    • ANSWER:
Most sinus infections are viral, not bacterial. Therefore, whatever antibiotic you took will not work.

Most here are treated with decongestants and pain control.

You can also try a saline nasal spray. I do not mean Afrin or Neosynepherine. Try it twice a day, per the package direction and you may have some relief.

      Good luck!

    • ANSWER:
Tissue perfusion of antibiotics in the sinus cavity is poor at best. The best thing you can do is try to dry the area up in an attempt to disrupt the environment that the bacteria live in. Decongestants work to this end. If you have a resistant strain of bacteria, a culture of the nasal bacteria may be helpful in identifying what antibiotics the bacteria would be suceptible to. This might be a case where you may have to allow your bodies own immune system the chance to fight off the infection. We are seeing more and more strains of resistant bacteria especially with regards to respiratory infections, this is due to people miss using antibiotics for the last 10 years.

  21. QUESTION:
    Sinus/Bronchitis contagious?
My mother in law is here for a week long visit, and she has just started her second round of antibiotics for a sinus infection/turned bronchitis. She has had this for almost 2 weeks. She says she feels very good, and her only remaining symptoms are cough and scratchy voice. She is coughing quite a bit.

I am 8 months pregnant and I have a 2 year old, and I am pretty paranoid about getting sick at this time. She told me upon her visit that she's "not at all contagious" and that she just started her second pack of antibiotics, the first was a Z pack, this is Levaquin. And yet every time I hear that cough, it makes me very nervous. Could this be a virus that is just holding on and that remains contagious? Anyone have any info of this? I need to chill out... thanks in advance!

    2 weeks on antibiotics ?
Hi, I was on antibiotics for 2 weeks. First on amoxil and then on z-pack for sinus infection. After doing blood work doctor said its viral and will go away by itself!!!!

Now after a week, i am starting to feal so weak.
Literally its hard for me to do any activity, I have my appetite.

BTW I am kind of under weight. 5'8 and weight 118 pounds.

This was my first time on antibiotics. Can it be the cause of weakness!

2 weeks ago I had blood work and it came out fine

yes people often complain of fatigue and weakness while on antibiotics. If that is your only complaint, just try to get back to normal activity gradually. It doesn't sound like there is anything to worry about.

  24. QUESTION:
    multiple lumps on gums?
I have 3 (one is relatively new - within the last 2 or 3 days, the one on the back left side has been there since about August a day after a dental appt and the one on the back right side is from the last month or two I think) lumps on the front of my gums, right above my back teeth on either side. None of them hurt, and the original 2 that were there have gone down and come back again without pain, no bitter taste (which is what happens when an abscess drains). I am otherwise medically sound and healthy except for a sinus infection that I am enduring right now and have had for a couple of days, and I think an ear infection. I am going on my Z-Pack (antibiotics) for my ear/sinus infections on Sunday night because that's the earliest I can get them... does anyone know what the lumps could be caused from? Or if they will go down / away with the antibiotics? They are the same color of my gums and don't cause any pain, just are kind of uncomfortable when I push on them (which I kind of do because my tongue is drawn to them, lol)

i have read about Pyogenic Granulomas... is it possible this is what it is? i am not pregnant, but I am a young adult (22) and have had poor oral hygeine in the past... sadly, but am getting better with it

i cannot get to the dr. or dentist until early march as I will be out of the area and my insurance is going through some weird transition phase.... initially i went on antibiotics for ANOTHER sinus infection in early september and my lumps didn't go away so i didn't think they were an abscess or an infection

Ok this might be ridicoulus questions, but I still need assurance.

I'm 23 male, It was december 17 2008 (How can I forget that dat). I was taking Zithromax (z-pACK) Antibiotic for my sinus infection. I remember I was studying and all of sudden I had some reacition that led to some serious Panic attack (I never knew what paniz attack was before that).

Long story short, I ended up in E.R, and after that I became so weak that I couldn't get out of house due to anxiety and weakness. Couple of months later I was in deep phase of depression and took University off. I was put on Zoloft along with Concerta (stilll taking them) and lets just say it gave me my life back.

Since then I have fear of antibiotics. So from last week I had throat infection and couldn't feel better till today so went to my family physician who prescribed me Amoxilin and assured me its safe.
I have taken it before ...after this experience and was fine with it.

However today I am feeling nervous and anxious and I keep on getting flash backs of that moment.
I mean in my room studying,, it was snowing outside. I mean searously, I try to divert but just can't.

You will be just fine. Remember that you have taken another antibiotic and it has had no ill affect. Do chill! Winston Churchill told the people of England during the WW11, that there is nothing to fear but fear itself.

I think this could apply to you also. We all suffer at times from 'fear'. It is the human condition. You will control it however. Think positive why not? Good things also happen, and will. Tomorrow this will all be just a bad day.

Hey guys I think I have a sinus infection, but not sure. Here is whats goin on....I have a massive amount of pressure in my forehead, eyes, and my nose. I'm all congested and feel like crap. When i blow my nose usually nothing comes out, but when it does it's not discolored mucus, it's clear. I occasionally get a bloody nose when i blow my nose though. It's been like this for a few days so my mom works at a doctor office and got Z PACK prescribed for me. I took the first 2 pills today. Supposively this is suppose to be a good antibiotic to get rid of sinus infections.I also am using Afrin nosespray and i rinse my nose with warm water and salt water (shoot it up my nostril and out the other). What do you guys think? Sinus infection or just a mild sinus problem? If it is how long until it goes away. I got a big football game saturday.

    • ANSWER:
Give the z-pack a day or so. It'll usually kick in after a day and make you feel a lot better. It does sound like you have a sinus infection though. By saturday you should be a lot better though. Almost back to 100 percent.

  29. QUESTION:
went to urgent care yesterday for bronchitis and sinus infeciton?
The dr mainly gave me a history of illness, that bronchitis won't be treated by antibiotics, and that with every cold, everyone gets bronchitis, a sinus infection, and pharyengitis.

He also made me worried, as I have asthma and he made mention of pneomonia. If he was so concerned, shouldn't he have taken an xray? I know I should go back for another opinion, but I don't have insurance, so this was a hardship enough.

As I have a history of sinus infections he gave me a z pack. He also told me not to take any cough syrup as it was 'a waste of money'

I'm at my wit's end, because I was up all last night coughing and have no voice... so do I just deal with it without taking any cough syrup?
thanks, I have been using the saline solution. What type of surgery did you have? I had septoplasty and a few other sinus related things when the ENT did it.
I went to urgent care, so he's not my normal doctor, the odd thing is though, he didn't want to give anything for the cough, but gave me six refills for albuteral. Which is like, if you're worried about one type of drug, shouldn't you treat the other one just as much? I have a really good doctor, I just didn't go to her because I don't have insurance (and the uc will work with you) and my dr was out yesterday

    • ANSWER:
First of all, if your symptoms are severe and causing you to lose sleep/suffer, there are things he can prescribe to remedy that, and if he just refuses you might want to consider changing doctors. As a chronic sufferer of bronchitis and sinus infections, I know for a fact that they can prescribe medications to provide some relief. Last time I had bronchitis I was given a cough syrup with codine to be taken before bed and a steroid inhaler. Granted I took myself off the inhaler pretty quick (because I didn't like the way the steroids were making me feel), but the cough syrup allowed me to get some much needed rest at night and did in fact help lessen my symptoms (whether it was from getting sleep or the actual medication I don't really care, it helped).

The z pack is usually what I get for sinus infections, so I agree with him there.

My suggestion is to pick up some NyQuil (it's a wonder drug) and maybe some liquid cough syrup/cough drops/vicks inhaler. You don't necessarily need all of that stuff, but it will help. I don't think you should worry about pneumonia just yet, unless your symptoms get worse and you're feeling a lot of pain/tightness in your chest. Also, you may want to re-evaluate your level of trust/believability with your doc. In college, I had a doctor who, despite my medical history, refused to treat me on several occasions, each one resulting in a 3-5 days stay in the hospital because of her negligence. This is of course a worst-case scenario, but if you know there's something wrong and your doctor just won't treat you, what's the point of having them?

  30. QUESTION:
What causes fluid to accumulate in your ear?
I recently just got over a severe sinus infection and was on a Z-pack. I took my last antibiotic yesterday, but my ear still has fluid in it and is causing a hearing impairment and a little bit of pain. I also get very dizzy when I pop my ears and try to make it better. I have called the doc and have an appt for tomorrow. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
You do need to consult your doctor, but for temporary relief, try Sudafed, or a generic form. It is great for relieving fluid buildup in the ear. I have been using it for years, and it's the only thing that really helps.

  31. QUESTION:
    Will Antibiotics cure this?
Okay, I went to the doctor today; and he told me that I have a throat infection, and that my ears look fine. About 3 hours after I got back, I suddenly got excruciating pain in the top part of my ear. It feels like there is a pimple or something up there; but I think It's a sinus infection, because I've had one like that before. The doctor put me on some antibiotics; called "z pack". I'm suppose to take 2 tonight, and then one for each day until they are gone. Will they help my ear as well as my throat? Thanks!
He put me on the antibiotics because it would help what I have.
    :P

    • ANSWER:
It really depend on if the infection is bacterial or viral. I personally don't take antibiotics unless I absolutely have to and neither should anybody else. Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria in your body, but also all the good bacteria which makes you more prone to easily get sick from something else.

Also, most people don't really follow the directions that their doctors give, which is to take ALL of the antibiotics over a period of time. What ends up happening is that the person starts to feel better so they quit taking their medication, which in turn allows the bacteria to mutate and become resistant to that particular antibiotic. That's why there are so many derivatives of antibiotics.

  36. QUESTION:
    Can Antibiotics cause digestion problems?
A few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with severe sinus infection. I was first given a "Z-Pack", and then my symptoms came back after about a week.

I was then given Levaquin. My Doctor told me this was very potent. I was given Levaquin in 500mg pills that I took for 10 days.

Ever since I've taken this, I feel like I absolutely cannot digest anything well at all. I get subtle feelings of cramps, bloating, and gurgles. Can this be caused by the antibiotics that I've been taking?

FYI: Today was my first day off the medication, I am finished with it. I bought some dietary fiber, will this help with my digestion at all?

    I'd appreciate any advice.

    • ANSWER:
Make sure that you're taking your antibiotics with a meal and not on any empty stomach.

One of the most common side effects of antibiotics is indigestion. Usually taking the pills with plenty of food is enough to make these symptoms subside, but if you still experience these side effects despite eating a big meal prior to taking the medications, call your doctor and tell her what your experiencing and see if they can suggest any alternatives that will be gentler on your stomach.

  37. QUESTION:
    Going on Antibiotics while TTC?
So, I woke up this morning with a horrible sinus infection and the doctor called me in a prescription for a Z-Pack. I am 2 days away from ovulation and the hubby and I were really hoping that this would be our month. Will these antibiotics affect anything, is okay to keep BDing?
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
You should be fine. If you needed to worry about anything it would be getting pregnant while on the pill taking an antibiotic if you weren't trying to get pregnant. So antibiotics can actually help you to get pregnant. Who knows, maybe it was meant to be that you are ovulating as you finish your z-pack to help you conceive. That would be awesome. :) Good luck, I too hope that this is your month. Sending lots of sticky baby dust in your direction.

  38. QUESTION:
Is it possible that I could be pregnant? After having sex, a week later I feel nauseous all of the time.?
I had sex on March 19th with my long term boyfriend. I have been on Yasmin (birth control) for almost three years, but at the time when we had sex, I was on antibiotics for a Sinus infection (Azithromycin or "z-pack"). We did not use a condom, but he did pull out before ejaculation. I am good with taking my pill, although sometimes I am an hour late. A week after this, I started feeling nauseous and still do to this day. My breasts are also very tender and a little swollen. I took a pregnancy test on March 31st which came back negative and am going to taken another on the morning of April 4th. My last period came as it normally does on March 13th and lasted until the 18th, so we had sex the day after my last period ended. I am expected to start my period in a little less than a week from this Friday. I am very young, as I'm only turning 21 this Monday, and very worried. Should I be overly concerned and go to a doctor or should I just see how the pregnancy test goes on Friday?

    • ANSWER:
wait and if your period does not show take another test.. or try agian on the 4th and use the first response test .

  39. QUESTION:
    constant sinus infection?
I've been sick off and on now for about a month and a half. After the first section, I was put on 500 mg amoxycillin 3x a day, and I felt better while on it. Within a few days after I stopped, the post nasal drip came back, as did my sore throat and my sinus pressure. I went back to the doctor and got a Z pack of azithromyacin 3 days 500 mg each. I felt better while on it but about 6 days after I finished the Z pack, I'm starting to feel the same thing again (i'm aware that the z pack works 4-10 days after you're done with the pills). I don't know what to do this point and I'm not sure my body can handle any more antibiotics. Someone suggested steroids.. but I just need something to help my body fight this infection between now and monday since I can't get to a doctor until then.

  40. QUESTION:
    Antibiotics and horrible stomach cramps?
So I had the flu about two weeks ago which led to a sinus infection in which my sinuses are swollen down to my teeth. Anyways my doctor put me on a Z-pack a five day antibiotic treatment last Wednesday. I took my last dose on Sunday and I've had horrible stomach pains since Sunday. Everything I eat makes me have the runs, I am severely lactose intolerant and my meds for that won't work so I can't really have dairy right now. I have a very busy Friday and Saturday and I feel so sick. What should I do?

    • ANSWER:
Drink lots of ginger ale to calm your stomach.
Coca cola will make you constipated if that is the desired result you are looking for however.

  41. QUESTION:
Should I stop taking the antibiotics?
I've been on a total of 5 different antibiotics in a month. First it was for a sinus infection, Amoxicillin didn't work so I was prescribed the Z pack.

THEN I was told I had a UTI and was prescribed Bactrim, didn't work. Then Cipro, nada. Now I'm on Ceftin. But I did some research and found my numbers aren't really in the range for a UTI.

Other than my symptoms the ONLY thing wrong with my urinalysis was the WBC and that was at 3-5. I read it should be >100 in order to classify as a UTI and 0-10 is actually a normal result. I also had "few bacteria" that was "mixed".

I'm really concerned taking so many antibiotics in such a short period of time. I mean, so many other things could be causing my frequent urination.

I have four pills left of the Ceftin, should I take them all? I don't want to become resistant but I do NOT want to take antibiotics anymore. I don't even think I have a UTI and I am taking antibiotics for no reason =/

And for all those that say "ask your Doctor", who do you think prescribed me all this junk?

    • ANSWER:
If you really don't feel it's making any difference, and your only symptom of a UTI is excessive urination, I don't see any reason why you can't discontinue it's use because it's not relieving the symptoms that it's supposed to, and/or you don't even have the symptoms in the first place!

Typically, it is best to finish the proper course of an antibiotic to make sure you get the best result, but you're apparently not having any result. If the Ceftin hasn't made any difference yet, I can't imagine it would suddenly make a miraculous turn for the better in the last 4 pills.

Try drinking a lot of cranberry juice for a treatment of your (possible) UTI if you still feel you may have one. Sometimes it's results are just as good or better than antibiotics (though I have to admit, not very often. At all. But it happens.).

The only absolutely sure way to tell if you have a UTI is to take a urine sample, and attempt to grow a culture from it. Your white blood cell count was normal, and those are present in greater numbers when fighting an infection. So the signs kind of point to no infection as you said, and I'd tend to agree with you.

Unfortunately, it's very common for Doctors to be lazy and throw antibiotics at us as a quick fix that doesn't involve any real work on the Doctor's part. If you just throw a medication at something, if it works you know you got it right, and if it doesn't, then maybe it's time to try a different one until one of them fixes your problem. Or give up and do some lab work and put some thought into it.

You won't become significantly more resistant to these antibiotics for the amount of time you were taking them. This really occurs when people are taking them for every little cold they have, which is partly their fault for being wimps about being a little under the weather, and partly the Doctor's fault for prescribing the drugs so willingly and frequently.

Unless you begin to develop any more signs of a UTI that are bothering you in some way more than just frequent urination (like pain), I can't see why you would continue with the antibiotics merry go round. It's clearly not doing anything for you. And also, you seem to indicate that there's nothing really to be fixed anyway.

Frequent urination, off the top of my head, is commonly caused by UTIs, Diabetes, water retention problems from illnesses like CHF (congestive heart failure), or the drugs given to combat problems like CHF or the edema that it causes, or edema from other causes. I assume you're not taking something like Lasix, your doctor would have to be unbelievably dumb to not notice something like that, and it would definitely be the reason you're peeing so much.

There are probably a lot more benign causes of frequent urination besides those serious problems I mentioned. However, my scope of knowledge usually tends to be about very serious health problems/threats, as I am a paramedic. I'd suggest when you see your doctor next, you really let him know that you are interested in the other possible causes for your only symptom of frequent urination. Don't forget, they may intimidate people sometimes with big words which also can keep patients in the dark, but you are ultimately the boss in this relationship! Make sure your Doctor explains anything you don't understand when he's talking to you.

As a side note, listening to your Doctor without question, and with complete blind faith because "the doctor is supposed to be smarter than you", is a good way to get killed. I've seen doctors prescribe medications that patients are deathly allergic to (and it says so right on the chart the doctor signed). I've literally had to d/c an IV of Levaquin on a patient of mine who was allergic to it and no one else noticed. Something seemed wrong when she was going into full blown Anaphylaxis while she was being readied by hospital staff to get moved to my ambulance for a transport. The point being, doctors are people, they make mistakes. More often than you'd think. Never stop thinking for yourself, but respect their schooling and wisdom - they are, after all, educated far better than us normal people about medicine. Just don't always take their words on blind faith.

So don't be afraid to speak up and lead him where you want your treatment to go. Don't put up with pushing antibiotics on you. Let him know they did nothing for you. Tell him you need him to investigate elsewhere and hopefully together you can figure out exactly what your problem is. The best courses of treatment for patients involve the patients in the process. I'm a firm believer of that in my own healthcare with my doctor, and I always urge all my patients to get involved in their treatment plans with their doctors, too. Good luck!

  43. QUESTION:
Are these antibiotics going to be enough?
I have a strep A infection (my tonsils are almost completely white and so swollen that swallowing is excruciating) and a sinus infection. I went to the doctor today, got this diagnosis, and was prescribed a "Z-pack" (Zythromax). When I got home after filling the prescription, I noticed that there were only 6 pills in the pack -- 2 for today, and one a day until Sunday (250mg per pill). For some reason, the low number of milligrams and the small number of pills makes me worried about the medicines ability to clear up the plethora of infections going on in my face/throat right now. How much stronger is Zythromax compared to Amoxycillin/Penecillin? I know they're in a different class of antibiotics, but are they less effective than Zythromax (so they need to be taken at higher doses/more often). I'm really confused.
Jamie, Zyklon B is a toxic pesticide...also used in WWII in the concentration camps. Its illegal here in the U.S. and I sure hope that your suggestion was a joke..although it isn't funny.

    • ANSWER:
Yes these pills will work on your strep and knock it. The "Z-Pack" is designed to stay n your system for up to a week after you have taken the last pill. Best wishes to you!

  44. QUESTION:
How do you know for sure if you have Lyme disease?
Apparently; this disease is very difficult to diagnose! And I know of alot of people who have been to the doctor (including myself) with what is thought to be sinus infections. I spent alot of time outdoors working; camping and fishing. And alot of my friends have the same symptoms that I had before they put me on an antibiotic. I seem to be gradually doing better. The symtoms I hear alot of them complain about is mainly a stiff neck, swollen glands in the neck, a slight rash, and confusion. And can having lime disease have an impact on your mental health? I mean since it seems to affect the nervous system you would think that it could. Its been 2 years since I took the antibiotic. But they say that Lyme disease is a very stubborn illness and can last for years. Is this true? I also had a reaction to the antibiotic. I'm allergic to Penicillin so; they gave me the Z - Pack. I am not allegic to this antibiotic.
    http://www.canlyme.com/smurraystory.html
The link above is an example.

    • ANSWER:
Lyme Disease is definitively diagnosed using an antibody test, confirmed by a test called a Western Blot, though the characteristic rash is sometimes enough for a doctor to make a diagnosis.

Treatment with antibiotics kills all of the bacteria that cause Lyme Disease, but arthritis symptoms may continue because of the damage they do.

In response to your mental health question, Lyme Disease is known to sometimes cause dementia and fatigue.

I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better and I hope your health continues to improve.

Well I have been on this antibiotics for 15 days (Amoxcilin and then z-pack) for sinus infection.

I am done all my antibiotics today - symptoms still there.
However since 2 days I also have joint stiffness and twitches especially in my calves and fingers. Can this be due to antibiotics???

    • ANSWER:

  46. QUESTION:
    Antibiotics while TTC?
I just got over the flu a couple days ago and now have a sinus infection...I probably need to go to the doctor and get a Z-pack or some sort of anibiotics but I do not want to go there and pay the copay and then them tell me I cant be on antibiotics when TTC....my last period was Feb 9th and I will not ovulate this cycle until the 23rd. I am still taking robotusin and now want to take antibiotics...is this safe for my future baby when TTC?

    • ANSWER:
I am reading a book, Taking Charge of your Fertility, which states that actually taking antibiotics (it suggested amoxicillin) around 4 days before you ovulate is helpful in conceiving because it makes your cm more egg-white consistent which is great for sperm to swim in... so I wouldn't worry a bit!

      Good luck!

  47. QUESTION:
I know that people don't always respond the same to antibiotics. Some work for others better and vice versa.

  48. QUESTION:
is it normal for azithromycin to make my heart race?
This is my third attempt at an antibiotic for strep throat and a sinus infection.

The first two, I had allergic reactions to (bad rash with penicillin meds).

This one seems to make me really tired and then make my heart race.

Has anybody else had this type of reaction to it?

It is also called "zithromax" I believe. (or Z pack).

  49. QUESTION:
    did my antibiotics not work?
i had a sinus infection last week and got on a z-pack. felt better and finished the 5-day z-pack on sunday. monday i felt really tired and weak and my throat hurt...last night i woke up in the middle of the night with a 101 fever (previously never had a fever), took some ibuprofen and went back to sleep. 8 hours later now i am fine with no fever, just tired from missing some sleep.

i can't figure out what happened or why i got a fever for only a few hours and then it went away?

    • ANSWER:
fever's purpose is sort of like to cook the bad bacteria or virus so that it dies. You should get checked out by a doctor to make sure it is bacterial or not. If it isn't there's nothing you can do but wait it out and drink tea, so having a fever is not a bad thing.

  50. QUESTION:
just finished a steroid for my sinus infection and the dr wants me to take it again. my mom says NO?
ok let me fill you in on the whole story first.
i've been sick since may 2nd. i went to my dr on may 4th. i received a z-pack even though i've used it before and it doesn't work that well. instead of getting better i just got worse. may 6th i called and said i was getting worse and i wanted a stronger antibiotic. the dr's office said NO and to take this steroid in addition to finishing the z-pack and to call on mmondy may 9th if i wasn't better. well i got somewhat better but not totally so i called on may 9th and they refused to give me anything else until i had a sinus x-ray. i had that on may 9th and called for the results may 11th. they called me back but i was out and didn't get the message until it was too late to call back. i called this morning may 12th and they didn't actually tell me the result of the x-ray they just said the dr wants you to take a steroid and i said i just got done with that same steroid yesterday. they said hold on.....well take it again.

my mom is saying NO cuz she's a registered nurse of 40yrs and does not think its healthy for me to be on a steroid again and that i actually need another antibiotic.

i'm not going to take the steroid but i don't know what to do!
i've still got sinus infection symptoms like snotty nose, stuffy nose, hacking stuff up, nose pain, check pain, teeth pain, slight ear pain, head aches, and my temp ranges from normal to 100 throughout the day.

what in the world should i do!

    • ANSWER:
Something seems fishy about them telling you to take the steroid again instead of giving you an antibiotic.

I'd demand to see the doctor ASAP and ask him WHY specifically he wants you to take it. He might have a valid reason for you taking a steroid longer, but clearly, it hasn't done much for you so far. You need to talk to him and hear exactly WHY he won't let you have a different antibiotic. Not the office staff, HIM. If you have to, get someone to take you to the doctor and DEMAND to see him.

      It shouldn't be this difficult.
